Revolutions Debate Speech
Post-Project Reflection
What were you asked to do in this project?
In this project, we were asked to write speeches about a specific revolution for a debate. The teachers, Jereb and Tateishi, made a template in Google Docs and made sure that each group had access to their own copy. My speech was about the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, which happened in 2004. Once we were finished with the speeches, we were asked to present them in a debate with another group who had a different opinion on the topic, “Do Revolutions Cause More Harm than Good?”. My group was the negative team, which meant that we believed revolutions caused more good than harm, although I didn’t personally believe that when this project first started. My group and I revised our speeches before presenting and changed a few things, but the speeches were overall written well and pretty solid.
What did you do/learn about in order to be able to complete this project?
I taught myself about the Orange Revolution of 2004 in Ukraine. Jereb didn’t know anything about the Orange Revolution when I came to him needing assistance on my third main point for the speech, so I had to continue researching and learning about it. I eventually understood all of what was going on and go to write my third main point, but I had to do it on my own. I became better at researching and reading key ideas and main points.
What did you learn from this project?
I learned a lot about the Orange Revolution. Like I stated before, since Jereb didn’t know anything about this revolution, I had to teach myself. I also learned better researching techniques and how to annotate text more efficiently.
What was difficult for you during this project? What did you do to improve your skills?
The most difficult thing for me in this project was not having anyone to teach me about the Orange Revolution. I struggled a lot towards the end of the project because I couldn’t find evidence in this revolution in order to prove one of my group’s main points. I asked one of my group members for help, but they ended up flaking on me and not helping me research even though they were done with their section of the project. That’s most likely why the project became difficult for me near the end of it.
Which Learning Outcome did you grow the most in during this project?
I grew the most in Knowledge and Thinking during this project because I had to learn about a revolution I didn’t know anything about. I didn’t even know that this revolution existed before accidentally choosing it for this project. I learned a lot about the Orange Revolution because I did the research on my own, and I had no one else (that I could physically communicate with) to explain the parts I didn’t understand to me. Those are the reasons that made me grow in Knowledge and Thinking the most.
Before the project, I used to put things off and wait until the last minute. During the project, I was constantly researching and writing even if it was a little part of a section – I at least wanted something on my section of the project. I repeatedly asked Jereb about the Orange Revolution but he kept telling me he didn’t know anything about it so, again, I had to research everything myself. I asked my group member to help me find articles that could possibly contain some kind of proof for the third main point but they flaked on me and didn’t help me. That’s how I increased my skill level in Agency.
What do you feel you still need help with? Explain.
Apparently I still need help with my oral communication/presentation since I got an 86 out of 100. I know I did my personal best, and if that’s only an 86 then I definitely need some help and advice on what I could do better next time so that I can get a 90 or above. Otherwise, I don’t think I need help with anything else. I’m sure that if the teachers wrote comments on our speeches like they did for the revolution literacy task than I would have a better paper, which would result in a better presentation, which would then improve/replace the grade I have now.
